Wildlife on Inishkea
Hidden off the rugged coast of County Mayo, the Inishkea Islands are a breathtaking gem of Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way, steeped in history and untouched beauty.

Sea Life
The waters off Inishkea are alive with marine life, from grey seals to playful bottlenose and common dolphins. With a bit of luck, visitors may also spot minke whales or even the occasional humpback from the Alt Mór, the highest point of the island.

Birds
Inishkea is a haven for birdlife, with oystercatchers along the shore and seabirds such as guillemots and razorbills nesting on nearby cliffs. In winter, flocks of barnacle geese arrive to spend the season on the island’s grasslands.

Land Animals
On land, the island is home to sheep and cows grazing the fields throughout the year. Rabbits are also common and can often be seen behind the old schoolhouse on Inishkea early in the morning or in the evening.
